Q: Why do I receive a message about secure and non-secure items when I use Lourdes Portal?

Basically you just click to acknowledge the message. Some of our portlets pull in information from external sites and this information is not encrypted. That's what generates the warning. Be assured that all information retrieved from the Lourdes University portal is protected with encryption. To stop getting the message follow the instructions below


INSTRUCTIONS TO MANUALLY FIX INTERNET EXPLORER

 

Open Internet Explorer

Click on Tools

Click on Internet Options

 

Click on the Security tab

Click on the Custom Level button

 

 

 

Scroll down about ½ way thru the list of Settings

Find Display mixed content

Click on the Enable radio button

Click OK

Choose Yes

Choose OK

 

This should solve your issue

Q: I forgot my username, what can I do?

For students, your login is your full first name and full last name with a period between them. Example: Jane Doe would have a username of jane.doe NOTE: There is a maximum of 20 characters in the username and the period between your first and last name counts as a character. (Ex., If your name is Alisa Williamson-Smith, your username would be: alisa.williamson-smi).

For staff, your User name (in most cases) should be your first initial plus the first seven letters of your last name.

Q: What should I do if I've forgotten my password?

For students, your password is the first four digits of your birthday (MMDD) and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. If you do not have a SSN, you will need to contact the ITC Helpdesk at 419-824-3807 to have a password assigned to you. Example: My birthday is January 3, 1964 (0103) and my social security number is 123-45-6789 (6789). Therefore, my password is 01036789.

Lourdes Portal uses the latest web technologies and will be upgraded continually to accommodate new features. Therefore, it is a good idea to use the most recent version of your browser.

Q: I heard the word "portlet" used. What does that mean?

The pieces or parts of a portal page, such as the toledoblade.com news feed, the current weather, or the Web search tool, are referred to by several different terms: portlets, services, channels, tools, etc. We tend to refer to them on this project as "portlets" because it seems to be a clear term, but we often use the word services or tool to convey the idea that something is useful when delivered to the portal.

Q: A portal is just a collection of bookmarks, right?

Not exactly. A bookmark helps you quickly revisit a site you've already found, but it involves an extra connection. Example: to peruse toledoblade.com takes a site visit to scan through the articles to see what's new and interesting. The Lourdes Portal automatically retrieves headlines from the site so you can scan it at once for interesting articles.
